About the Program
The Personal Fitness Trainer Program will prepare students for technical careers in the professional fitness industry. The program will provide students with training in personal and group fitness pedagogies. Students will possess the knowledge and technical skills to work as a Personal Fitness Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor. Appropriate preparation for these occupations is ensured by the curriculum design and instruction methods used in the fitness industry. Students will gain extensive practical experience in many areas, including fitness evaluation and testing, wellness, injury prevention, exercise activity design and facility operations.
About the Program Coordinator: Teri Dimas
Teri has been in the fitness industry for fifteen years, and has worked for Northwest Vista College for the last twelve years, teaching a variety of classes including: Boot-camp Cardio, Cardio Kickboxing, Core Training, Hiking and Backpacking, Jogging, Physical Conditioning, Pilates, Spin Bike, Walking, & Yoga. Teri has also taught Foundations of Kinesiology, & Concepts of Health and Fitness which allow students the opportunity to gain service learning through their selected specialization in the field. She has been the Lead Academic Advisor for the Kinesiology Department, and has teamed up with multiple organizations, schools, and facilities to offer students hands on experience. Teri continues to incorporate critical thinking, & cooperative learning in culturally diverse classrooms throughout her teaching. She aims to ensure that all students completing the Personal Fitness Trainer program will develop the skills necessary to evaluate, and construct programs following the OPT model to ensure the safety and efficiency of training. She aims to ensure students know how to use technology and training theories to enhance their job readiness. Her favorite quote as Bill Beattie once said is, “The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.” In her spare time she enjoys hiking, fishing, softball, and all outdoor activities. She believes that individual’s should never forget how to play.
