Dr. Mike Flores Named Incoming Chancellor

At a special board meeting today, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Mike Flores as the new chancellor of the Alamo Colleges beginning October 1, 2018.  Flores will be the first Hispanic chancellor of the district and will replace current chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie, who is retiring as of September 30, 2018 after 11 years of outstanding leadership. Flores was the sole finalist selected by the board for the position.

“The fact that Dr. Flores was the sole finalist for chancellor speaks volumes about the board’s confidence in him as a great fit for the leader of the Alamo Colleges District,” said Dr. Yvonne Katz, Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees Chair. “As a 19-year veteran of the Alamo Colleges community and a long-time local resident, Dr. Flores has an in-depth understanding of the district, the colleges and the greater community which will stand him in good stead as chancellor,” she added.

Dr. Flores has worked for the Alamo Colleges District since 1999, and since 2012 has served as president of Palo Alto College (PAC). Other positions he has held at PAC prior to becoming president include director of institutional research, planning, and development; director of the Title V grant program; dean of institutional effectiveness and community development; vice president of college services; vice president of student affairs; and interim vice president of academic affairs.

Active in many community organizations, including the boards of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Communities in Schools, Hot Wells Park Conservancy and the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission, Dr. Flores also serves as a leadership coach and data coach for Achieving the Dream; a coach in the Texas Success Center Pathways Project; and on the board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Dr. Flores holds a B.A. in political science from The University of Texas at San Antonio, an M.S. in political science from Illinois State University and a Ph.D. in educational administration from The University of Texas at Austin.

The chancellor search was a participative and representative process which included the use of an external search consultant. The Board of Trustees reviewed the entire applicant pool in consultation with the search consultant and unanimously accepted the recommendations of the Advisory Search Committee. Following interviews of candidates, the Board was unanimous in naming Flores as the sole finalist.

A series of community engagement events and meetings are scheduled to begin immediately and will continue through fall to allow Flores the opportunity to meet with faculty, staff and students at each of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges and to connect with local and regional community partners.
