Welcome to the Alamo Colleges College Credit for Heroes Initiative website. The purpose of the College Credit for Heroes initiative at the Alamo Colleges coincides directly with the Healthy People 2020 goal to create social environments that promote good health by access to social and economic opportunities through higher education.
Military service members and veterans are often recognized as a culture unto themselves. For decades, this class of individual has received training while on military duty that is not valued in the civilian workforce, thus leaving the returning veteran without employment opportunities. By helping service members utilize and build on their military education, we are improving both their economic and educational outlook and, in essence, contribute to theirs, as well as to their families’ health.
Since July 2011, the College Credit for Heroes Initiative at Alamo Colleges has focused on enhancing the opportunities for military service members and veterans who have received allied health education and training while serving in the U.S. military. Central to this effort is work directed towards the maximization of transfer credits to accelerate the attainment of Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees in Health Information Technology (3 Tracks) and Nursing. Future opportunities will include new accelerated pathways in the attainment of Associate of Applied Science degrees in Pharmacy Technology, Paramedic, Medical Assisting, and Dental Assisting through the Alamo Colleges.
“While we can never fully thank veterans for their service to our nation, I am proud of the steps we have taken to help veterans and military service members transition to civilian life by applying their skills and experience to help them graduate more quickly and save money on tuition.” - Rick Perry, Texas Governor
