Learning communities allow students to take two linked courses with the same group of students, establishing an increased connection with peers. Faculty create clear connections between both classes with a seamless thread of learning. These paired courses allow the students to use the subject matter in one course to develop the learning strategies in the other course. For example in our biology/speech class the students will prepare their speeches based on the information learning in the biology class. The classes are back to back to providing students the ability to walk to class together.

Students indicated they had an increased relationship with their peers and of sense of belonging. The students knew each other names and they felt encouraged by one another to work harder to achieve their goals. Many wished all their classes could be so connected. The survey data from these classes indicated that the majority of these students thought that joint assignments and activities improved their understanding of the material and they would recommend a learning community to a friend and would register for another one.
