What is a Portfolio?

The knowledge you’ve gained outside the classroom is valuable. It is important that this knowledge be recognized. Now we have a process for ensuring your knowledge is recognized and validated. It’s called PLA (prior learning assessment) and you can do it online today.

The knowledge you’ve gained outside the classroom is valuable. It is important that this knowledge be recognized. Now we have a process for ensuring your knowledge is recognized and validated. It’s called PLA (prior learning assessment) and you can do it online today.
 


Prior Learning Assessment is a process for evaluating knowledge and skills in order to award college credit from on the job training, corporate training, independent study, military services and volunteer services.  Our process teaches you how to develop an electronic portfolio that includes a description of what you have learned. You must provide the date the training was completed, number of hours of training and other essential information, such as a course description.  Following are some of the examples of documentation that you can submit for portfolio review:

  • Certificates,
  • Licenses,
  • Training courses, workshops or seminars,
  • Transcripts from unaccredited colleges or schools,
  • Transcripts from nationally accredited institutions that only offer diplomas or certificates, and a
  • Description of your experience as it aligns with the learning outcomes of specific courses.

Within six months of completion of the PLA 1001 or PLA 1002, you can develop your portfolio to receive credit from the Alamo Colleges in one of the programs of study listed below:

  • Allied Health
  • Business Management (leadership and co-op courses)
    • Marketing
    • Human Resources
    • International Business
    • Finance
     
  • Community Health Worker
  • Computer Maintenance
  • Computer Support Specialist
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Hotel Management
  • HVAC
  • Information Security & Assurance
  • Network Administrator
  • Pharmacy Technology
  • Public Administration (co-op course)
