What is the Human Services program?

The Human Service Program is part of the Department of Psychology and Sociology.  It is for students seeking licensure as Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDCs), and those who want practical preparation for a career in the human services field.  The LCDC is the only mental health counseling license in Texas that requires an associates degree.

What will I learn?

Courses are designed to meet licensing requirements for the LCDC, as well as provide a strong foundation for other careers in mental health.  Courses cover how to work directly with clients in  human service prevention and treatment settings.  This is the only academic program in San Antonio at an accredited college that meets the state's educational requirements for LCDC licensure!

What can I do with this course of study?

Graduates can seek licensure as LCDCs, and certification as prevention specialists. They can transfer to selected university bachelor's degree programs.  They can seek employment in mental health/human services settings.

What's special about program?

All Human Services faculty members are professional clinicians, with one or more state-level professional licenses.  They work with clients and bring that expertise to the classroom. Students learn how to work with clients, not just about working with clients.  The Human Services Program is a great place to start a professional career (not just a job) helping people!
