Dr. Robert E. (Bob) Zeigler is President of San Antonio College.
After service in the U. S. Navy, Dr. Zeigler earned an associates degree from San Antonio College, his B.S. and M.A. degrees in American History from Sam Houston State University, where he graduated with honors, and his Ph.D. in American History from Texas Tech University.
Dr. Zeigler taught history at Weatherford College and then in 1971 he began teaching at San Antonio College, where he has devoted his career. In addition to serving on the history faculty, he has held many positions at the college, including Coordinator of the Telecourse Program, Chairperson of the Faculty Senate, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Vice President of the College, Interim President, Executive Vice President, and President.
Dr. Zeigler has played a major leadership role at the college in establishing and implementing a viable program review and institutional effectiveness system, in nurturing and encouraging a technology program resulting in San Antonio College being a leader in instructional technology in the state and nation, and in refining the college budgeting process. He has helped to establish articulation agreements with a number of colleges and universities, and was an early leader in developing an innovative academic partnership with the Navy. He has guided the college through a recent Southern Association of Colleges and Schools reaccreditation process. He is a strong proponent of shared governance and has practiced it in a manner that has built a high level of trust among all college constituencies. Dr. Zeigler has also helped implement continuous improvement of the college’s efforts in the area of student success.
Dr. Zeigler has published articles on labor history in scholarly journals and has made presentations on history and educational matters at national, regional, and state conferences.
His colleagues recognized him with the Faculty Service and Excellence Award and nominated him for the Piper Professor Award. In 2001 he was recognized by the Texas Community College Instructional Administrators Association as one of two outstanding instructional leaders in the state. In 2003 he received the Ford Salute to Education Award and was honored by the Business and Professional Women's Club of San Antonio with the "Yellow Rose of Texas Award" for outstanding contributions in the field of education and for inspiring those seeking self-improvement. In addition, the West San Antonio Chamber and the Chair Academy have recognized him for his educational leadership.
Dr. Zeigler is a member of The Rotary Club of San Antonio, has served on the Advisory Board of the Edgewood Independent School District’s Fine Arts High School, is a participant in the Community College Consortium Leadership training, and is a member of the Board and of the Executive Committee of the San Antonio Education Partnership. He has served on public school site based committees including the Howard Early Childhood Center Committee. He chaired a major task force that successfully resolved a number of divisive issues with the associations representing the neighborhoods surrounding the college. Dr. Zeigler also devotes time to Habitat for Humanity.
Dr. Zeigler is a strong advocate of wellness and a healthy lifestyle. He follows a regular exercise regime. He also enjoys reading and sports.
