Student Musician Attends International Event

Student Musician Attends International Event

For the third summer in the row, a student from one of the Alamo Colleges, was selected to attend the 23rd annual International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) meeting as the A-JAM student representative. The intercultural A-JAM program is open to students from any of the five Alamo Colleges.

Auditions are held each November, with finalists selected to form a jazz combo that performs in the San Antonio area during the spring. The combo is coached by regional professionals and visiting artists. One A-JAM member is then selected to attend the IASJ summer meeting.

NVC student p ercussionist and bass guitarist Odie Wallace was selected to attend the 2013 meeting in Denmark. Along with many world renowned jazz musicians, Odie performed with fellow students from around the world. Singer Jeané Gaines participated in the meeting in São Paulo, Brazil in 2011 and bassist Stephen Bennett participated in the 2012 meeting in Graz, Austria.

Upon returning from the international event, Odie appeared with NVC faculty member Katchie Cartwright on July 15 on Katchie's Planet Jazz, KRTU Jazz 91.7 FM radio show. He shared his reflections on the event and the opportunity to play with students and professionals from many nations. The show also introduced the brand new CD featuring the 2012 IASJ student groups, recorded live in Graz, Austria, including our 2012 A-JAM alum, Stephen Bennett from Northwest Vista College.
