Dr. Vela Takes the Reigns

San Antonio College administration, faculty and staff came together in the McAllister Auditorium on Monday afternoon for the College’s annual Convocation. The Convocation served as a welcome back for the 2014-15 academic year, which officially begins next Monday, August 25.

Dr. Robert Zeigler opened the ceremony, addressing the audience for a final time as president. A former student, Zeigler spent more than 43 years at SAC in various roles, working his way from a member of the faculty to the head of the college. Ziegler concluded by handing over the presidential medal and presidential duties to Dr. Robert Vela. Vela, who has been the Vice President for Student and Academic Success for the past two years, was selected by the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees in July to succeed Zeigler.

Dr. Vela then addressed the SAC community for the first time as President, introducing his executive team and briefing the group on the state of the college. New faces on the executive team include: Dr. Kris Clark, interim Vice President of Student and Academic Success and Dr. Lisa Alcorta, Dean of Student Success.

During his presentation, Dr. Vela challenged the audience to maintain a constant focus on student success. He asked faculty and staff in attendance to “keep their eye on the ball” by making sure that everything they were doing contributed to helping SAC students succeed.

At the conclusion of Convocation, the audience was treated to a special advanced peek of SAC’s newest addition, the Gnome Ranger “mascot” or “spirit figure.” To learn more about the soon-to-be-debuted Gnome Ranger, view this video .
