Student of the Month Award March 2017 - La Prensa Foundation

Roxanne Saunders is the recipient of the March 2017 La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Student of the Month Scholarship and will receive an award of $500 from the La Prensa Foundation founded by Amelia and Tino Duran. Ms. Roxanne Saunders is a member of the Psi Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College, the largest educational honor society in the world. Roxanne currently serves as the Vice President of Fellowship for the Psi Kappa Chapter. She is responsible for cultivating a relationship with the campus community, encouraging scholarly fellowship at all levels of the Society, and implementing strategies to increase membership. Ms. Saunders’s membership in the Society reflects discipline, determination, and an innate desire to succeed. She has proven this with her high academic GPA of 3.6. Her involvement in the Society demonstrates servant leadership, sound communication skills, professionalism, and emerging leadership talent. In fact her commitment in her role as VP of Fellowship increased our chapter’s membership by 20% from last fall.

Ms. Saunders co-led the chapter’s Honors in Action project, Individualism vs. Collectivism, which resulted in an awareness campaign regarding our institutions accreditation. She also supports the chapter’s College Project, Quality Enhancement Plan- Ethical Decision Making (EDM), by serving in the college’s Implementation Team and conducting classroom presentations on the topic. She has given back to the community by volunteering her time at the Davidson Respite House on a monthly basis. Her discipline and determination is owed to her 27 years of service in the army. Both her and her husband traveled the country together and saw parts of the world they would have never imagined if not serving their country. Her and her husband will be celebrating 29 years of marriage February 18. She has two beautiful children and as a family they love to travel and experience the taste of food from other countries.

Roxanne has always displayed a high degree of integrity, critical thinking, and responsibility. Her determination, exceptional scholastic accomplishments, and her impact in the chapter, college, and community are characteristics of a true scholar. She is very deserving of being the student of the month.
