What is the Accuplacer placement test?

                    a. The Accuplacer test is a state approved exam. It will identify your academic strengths and areas that may need more development to help you succeed in college courses. The test results are needed for all students who have had little or no previous college course work, even if a student is considered exempt/waived from the state's Texas Success Initiative (TSI) testing requirement.                   b. The computer-administered exam consists of four sections:

  • 90 minute essay
  • 20 question multiple-choice non-timed Reading Comprehension
  • 20 question multiple-choice non-timed Sentence Skills
  • 12 question multiple-choice non-timed Elementary Algebra

                    c. Results are available immediately following the exam. 

 


        

 What is required before I take the test?

FIRST TIME IN COLLEGE STUDENTS

  • Turn in official High School transcript
  • Turn in any and all official test scores (ACT,SAT,TAKS,Accuplacer,THEA, ASSET)
  • Complete MyMap Modules (this must be completed at least 24 hours prior to taking the Accuplacer)
    • Test Prep

Your MyMap modules can be accessed via your student portal, ACES, under the START HERE tab.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

In order to determine if testing and placement is needed, we ask that you

  • Turn in all official college transcripts
  • Turn in any and all official test scores (ACT,SAT,TAKS,Accuplacer,THEA, ASSET)
  • Take advantage of our test prep materials, under Helpful Links.

 


 

Do I need to take this test?   

 The Accuplacer Exam is available for the following students: 

  • First Time in College  
  • Previously tested on Accuplacer or THEA within the past 3 years and seeking to re-test   
  • Requiring an accommodation approved by the NVC Access Office   
  • Enrolling in a English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses   
  • Transferring from a college/university that must to take only a portion of the test   
  • Previous test scores are expired  

    

   How do I sign up for the test?

                   a.  The Accuplacer is given on a walk-in basis during the week.  (Please refer to the schedule) 

                   b.  If you have approved accommodations through the NVC Access Office, you must make an appointment with the Testing Office at least 4 working days in advance.

                              i.  Only accommodations such as reader/scribe and/or private room require an appointment.

 What do I need to bring with me to take the test?

                   a.  You will need to have a valid photo ID.

                   b. You must have an application on file at one of the Alamo Colleges in order to test.

                   c.  In order to take the placement exam, you will need to know your Banner ID (Student ID).

                    d.  The exam fee of $29 for entire exam or $10 per section. 

                               i.  The fee is payable by cash, credit, check, or money order.

 


 

5. When can I retest?

  • Students are allowed to retest on the next available test date.  This includes retesting all parts, one or multiple parts.
  • For all second or subsequent retests, we recommend that the students retest after 2 weeks or complete a formal college test prep or intervention program to improve their current test scores.

Please keep in mind that this is only a recommendation and that the student is eligible to retest on the next available test date.

Important Information

 Please note that any unapproved items for your exam will not be allowed in testing rooms; purses, cell phones, books, etc.  It is advised to leave these items in a safe place while testing.  Coin return lockers (quarter) are available on a first come first serve basis, and are not guaranteed.  Testing staff is not responsible for holding items and you will not be allowed to test with any unapproved items in testing room. 

A photo ID is required for all exams. 

All Exams must be completed in one sitting, and by end of scheduled test times. (please refer to exam schedules)
