Alumni Story: Richard Canfield
“My associate’s degree has been a stepping stone to further my education in a dynamic new world.”
Richard Canfield graduated from Northwest Vista College in 2009, with an associate’s degree in Digital Media.
He now has an active role in the local creative community as director of communications for Alamo City Film Festival, a nonprofit organization focused on bringing films and film resources to the city. He credits his degree from NVC for providing the credibility needed to acquire professional positions and continue filmmaking.
Richard received his Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts from the New School of Public Engagement in New York City, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Media Management from there as well. He has worked as a freelance journalist, photographer, artist, and filmmaker whose body of work includes a wide range of music videos and films.
He says NVC will always be a part of him; and adds that there’s always something to learn and create on campus.
“It’s truly an environment where you can discover your inner passions and engage in new ideas,” he said. “NVC is something you can be a part of and keep with you forever."
His advice for current students is to take advantage of the state-of-the-art technology and creative arts programs at NVC, which he considers some of the best Texas has to offer. He recommends students also check which program credits will transfer.
“There are plenty of resources to discover your interests, this is the time to explore and experiment with your career desires,” he says.
