Winning Essay: Coley T. Bellamy

Why a Degree?

ColeyI began attending the Alamo Community Colleges 3 years ago with the intentions of opening up my opportunities towards better pay. At the time I was working in a small warehouse making just above the minimum wage. I assumed that I could just get a degree and boom, instantly more money. In all honestly it hasn’t been that easy.  Presently I am finishing up my associates program at Northwest Vista and my goals have changed slightly. During a leadership exercise my eyes were opened up to something larger than just myself, something larger than just pay.

Currently I receive a modest salary, which provides me a comfortable home and reliable vehicles. I have a beautiful wife and we share a two year old daughter. I could easily be satisfied by a small increase in salary and we could have a great life. But, now thanks to that leadership exercise I have a larger goal. I want to do something more to help out.

Years ago when I was a child, my cousin Jonathan and I dreamed of building our own skate park.  A safe place we, and other kids, could go learn, entertain, and challenge ourselves. Our dream was for a huge park with enough room to accommodate everyone. Bikers, bladders, skaters and even the kids on scooters were all the guys we wanted to cater to.  Jonathan has since passed away, but I still remember him vividly and that dream we both shared, the dream of creating a place for kids to learn and have fun.

That leadership workshop at Northwest Vista helped me to create my newest goal, to create a youth organization with an emphasis towards skate parks along side school tutoring programs. This is my initial dream of building a skate park coupled with the outstanding need for our nation to increase the education of our youth. I believe this idea could be great, and a huge accomplishment for my life and the lives of others. However, I know that this dream of mine will take lots of work and time.

To be able to make this dream a reality I need the right education. To couple a skate park and tutoring programs would take lots of work and cohesion between the business community, educational community, and myself. To get the ball rolling I feel it is critical that I receive at the very least a bachelors degree. I need to learn about businesses, non-profits, and childhood development. These are the basic ideas I need to have for a successful youth program and the Northwest Vista has been my start.

Dreams are the reason I have come to Northwest Vista to earn a degree. I could easily stay at my current job and slowly move up the ranks. It would be a decent living for most. However, I want more and I feel it is my duty to do more. This is the reason I seek a degree. It is easy to have ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen. What I seek is the knowhow and the means to bring my ideas to light.
