Winning Essays 2013 > Yasemin

Winning Essay: Yasemin A. Dinibutun

Why a Degree from NVC?

Student-Yasemin-MediumWhen I was in high school, I often overheard my classmates talking about people, usually famous, who were successful and made lots of money with no college- and then go on to say how they thought college was a waste of time and money.  I have seen and heard of these stories myself; however I didn’t reach the same conclusion.  I think most people want to have a successful life spent doing the things they love and making a difference in the world, and most people also don’t want to spend their life working some boring job.  I believe a college degree is the difference between just working some job and having a career, and a career that has the potential to lead you to do amazing things, make incredible discoveries and change the world.  I want to have a career and make an impact in the world, and to do this I need a degree.  Northwest Vista College is a great way for me to achieve this goal.

When I was very young, I was always fascinated by rocks and constantly collected the ones I found most interesting.  I remember my favorites were the ones with the ‘sparklies’ that twinkled in the sunlight as you turned the stone slowly.  I think my interest in rocks and minerals really took off when I lived in Colorado.  The constant presence of the mountains looming over me made me constantly think about rocks.  Part of my front yard was also filled with pebbles, and I would spend hours observing each one and keeping the ones I thought most intriguing and beautiful.  But even though my interest in Geology continued through the years, only recently did it strike me to become a Geoscientist.  Even then, I wasn’t completely sure, but I have always wanted to do something that made a difference in the world.  I can do so much with Geology:  study earthquakes, help answer questions about climate change, even learn about planets other than Earth.  Talk about making a difference!

Like many students, paying to attend a big university is difficult.  Northwest Vista College makes it possible for anyone to afford college and be able to get a degree and start or advance their career.  But for me, Northwest Vista is even more than that.  For people like me who have minor learning difficulties, we would struggle going to a huge university right after high school.  Northwest Vista is a gateway into college where I can be in the small classes and get the individual attention I need to do well in college while preparing and saving for university, while completing the first two years of my Bachelor’s.  Northwest Vista is the reason I can afford, but also be successful in, college.  Northwest Vista College has not only made it possible for me to accomplish more than I ever could otherwise, but to perhaps impact the world.
