Winning Essays Spring 2014 > Brandi

Winning Essay: Brandi

Why a Degree?

BrandiAchieving a degree from Northwest Vista College and the Alamo Community College District is extremely important to me because there are so many goals that I want to accomplish and adversities that I feel the need to overcome. I must give a brief history of myself that begs to be told. I was a good student in grade school despite various family issues throughout my childhood; however, six days after my 16th birthday, I became a mother. I continued in school until I became homeless with my son at the age of seventeen. I got a job as a housekeeper at a nursing home, ended up getting an apartment and slowly worked my way up to considerably better things.

I have always had a strong desire to go back to school, get a good education and get a degree. I have always had an insatiable love of learning ever since I was a young child. But when one is working, raising a young family and so on, going to school seems close to impossible. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months into years as my dream of going to school remained on the back-burner while I took care of everyday life matters. Finally, in the Spring of 2013, still working full-time as a housekeeper, I excitedly began my journey as a Full-time college student.

I am currently still a full time student working towards an Associate’s Degree in Business Management/Administration. I also still work full time, raise my three boys and maintain a 4.0 GPA. It is tremendously important for  me to get a degree from the Alamo Colleges because I want to show my children that it can be done, that nothing should ever get in the way of following your dreams no matter how difficult, no matter how challenging, no matter how impossible it may seem.

I have been a housekeeper for a little over eleven years. It is the only job that I have ever held. Although, I suppose there are certain aspects of my current job that may be considered favorable in a sense, I do not particularly enjoy it; I hope to one day be in a position where I can advance into fields where I can use my education on an everyday basis. Getting a degree from the Alamo Colleges will definitely help me to achieve much more out of life including a better paying, more suitable career.

I want to get a degree from Northwest Vista and then transfer to a four year University in order to get my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Finance. I selected this major because I one day want to open a barbeque restaurant with my fiancé. I plan to run the restaurant from the business standpoint and he will run it from the kitchen side. This has been our dream for years and little by little we our following our plans in order to make it happen. Getting a degree is the first step.
