Student Story: Kathleen
Kathleen Garcia will soon be leaving Northwest Vista College, but she’s making sure she doesn’t leave empty handed on her new adventure at Texas A&M in College Station. She’s taking one more government class at A&M so she can get her associate degree from NVC.
“I’m getting an Associate of Arts in Kinesiology and I thought this will look even better on my resume since I plan to get a bachelor’s degree in nutrition. Also, I don’t want to leave empty handed,” said Kathleen, 20, who hopes to start her own fitness studio in the future and has been secretary of the NVC Kinesiology Club.
Kathleen said in her two-and-half-years at Northwest Vista, she has come to love the college so much that she hopes to contribute to an NVC scholarship one day. She said the kinesiology instructors have played an instrumental role in helping her academically and with her career goals.
Kathleen’s path to NVC took an untraditional route. She was homeschooled because she competed in figure skating and Tae Kwan Do competitions. She’s a second-degree black belt and is considered an alternate on the USA’s Tae Kwan Do team in the 24-year-old and under category. She also teaches at the National School of Martial Arts in San Antonio.
Kathleen also worked for the Walt Disney Company at Radio Disney AM 1160, which is broadcasted out of San Antonio. She was one of the original RD Frequency dance team members and a “kid correspondent,” where she got to do voice overs, movie reviews, as well as interviews with Disney celebrities.
When Kathleen got accepted to TX A&M in September, she posted this announcement on NVC’s Facebook page, “Thank you Northwest Vista College for preparing me and being such a great school! I just got accepted into Texas A&M University in College Station and will be transferring in the spring. I couldn't have done it without you guys!!! - Forever a Wildcat.”
