V2V Advocate: Darryl Nettles

Darryl NettlesDarryl Nettles served our country proudly for 22 years in the United States Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant following 9-11 in January 2002.  He started his military career in 1979 as a personnel specialist and ended his career as the flight chief of the largest Airman Leadership School in the Air Force.  His assignments included two tours at Randolph AFB; US European Command in Stuttgart Germany; Bergstrom AFB, Texas; the US Air Force Academy, Colorado; and the Mathies Airman Leadership School, RAF Feltwell, England.  He has also served on numerous temporary duty assignments to include Rheinmain and Ramstein Air Bases Germany; the Military Academy at WestPoint; the Naval Academy at Annapolis; New Orleans, Louisiana; March AFB, California; and Gunter and Maxwell AFBs, Alabama.  The pinnacle and most humbling moment of Darryl’s career was being honored as the USAF Enlisted Professional Military Education Manager of the Year.  He began his civilian career in September 2002 at San Antonio College as the Associate Director of Student Activities and as an adjunct continuing education instructor.

Darryl came to Northwest Vista College in January 2006 as the Assistant Coordinator, Student Leadership and Activities and was later promoted to Coordinator.  He has also served as a student development course instructor.  Darryl is currently serving as a District Learning and Talent management specialist.  He holds an associate’s degree in Instruction of Military Science and Technology from the Community College of the Air Force and a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management (which took him 14 years to complete!) from Colorado Christian University.  Darryl is married and has five children and five grandchildren.

Darryl credits his mission statement—“Do the right thing, because it’s the right thing to do”—for his success as a servant, first and as a leader, second.
