HITT 1005 - Medical Terminology (36 Hrs)
An in-depth study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures.
This course introduces the student with medical terminology, word origin, structure and application. Introduction to abbreviations and symbols, surgical and diagnostic procedures and medical specialties. The student will be able to identify, pronounce, and spell medical terms using various resource tools. Use medical terms in context: utilize prefixes, suffixes, root words, and plurals to construct medical terms: analyze medical terms: translate abbreviations and interpret symbols. TEXT REQUIRED
HPRS 2001 - Pathophysiology (36 Hrs)
Students will study the pathology and general health management of diseases and injuries across the life span. Topics include etiology, symptoms, and the physical and psychological reaction to diseases and injuries. TEXT REQUIRED
POFM 1000 - Medical Coding (80 Hrs)
Survey of medical insurance including the life cycle of VARIES claim forms, terminology, litigation, patient relations, and ethical issues. Topics include: medical records coding, ICD-9-CM and CPT-4, billing and bookkeeping, fee collection, insurance terminology, benefit coverage, insurance claims including workman's compensation, Medicare and Medicaid. Text required. Pre-requisite: Medical Terminology.
HITT 2046 - Advanced Medical Coding (48 Hrs)
In depth coverage of ICD and CPT coding rubrics, conventions, principles, and updates as they apply to accurate coding of complex medical/surgical cases, with emphasis on case studies. Government regulations and changes in health care reporting will be addressed. Interpret inpatient or outpatient medical records to assign appropriate principal/secondary diagnosis and principal/secondary procedures. Pre-requisite: Medical Coding.
HITT 2045 - Certification Exam Review (24 Hrs)
Review of coding competencies and skills in preparation for a coding certification exam. Pre-requisite: Advanced Medical Coding.
