KSYM Stocks the Pantry

Over the weekend, San Antonio College’s KSYM student-run radio station hosted an extremely successful “Stock the Pantry” Food Drive to benefit the new Student Advocacy Center. The call for help resulted in many faithful KSYM listeners donating more than 1,300 food items, 40 household items, a $200 HEB gift card and a check for $100.

“KSYM is proud to take part in this important outreach,” said Hot Mustard, KSYM’s morning drive host and the station’s program manager. “The Stock the Pantry Food Drive is an annual event focused on providing food and other household items for those who are in need, and this year all the donations will go to help our very own students.”

KSYM chose to have the donations go to the Student Advocacy Center this year in light of the staggering figures that were released last year. San Antonio College took part in the HOPE survey in Fall 2016 which indicate that 44% of students are Food Insecure; 25% of those student’s experience severe food insecurity; 41% of students are Housing Insecure; and 10% of students are Homeless.

The Student Advocacy Center opened in the Spring 2017 semester and is led by Social Work Program Coordinator, Lisa Black.

In addition to providing a food pantry, the Center provides a wealth of resources to access crucial social services for students to be able to continue on their path to complete their academic goals.
