SAC Earns $6.3M for Five TRIO Grants

Alamo Colleges District – San Antonio College’s TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program with SAISD’s Edison High School has been renewed for $1.3M for five more years, cementing it as one SAC’s key outreach initiatives.

With the renewal of the UBMS program with Edison, SAC now has earned a total of about $6.3M in funding for five TRIO programs currently in operation at the College.

The other four active TRIO grants—each with funding totaling over one million each—include:

  • TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) STEM Program
  • TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Veterans "Project Valor" Program
  • Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) at Highlands High School
  • Upward Bound (UB) at Burbank and Lanier High Schools

“We are honored that the U.S. Department of Education renewed our funding,” said Richard Farias, Interim Dean of Student Success. “By awarding SAC this grant, it means they trust us to continue to provide high touch services to students within our own backyard.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education’s website, there are eight TRIO programs which serve and assist disadvantaged populations, including low-income individuals, veterans, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.

The focus of the TRIO program is to be able to help students become familiar with a college going environment, and ultimately pursue higher education.

Current SAC Student Ciara Zurita, who was recently featured in the I AM SAC Proud campaign, is a testament to how TRIO has helped her be successful.

She became involved with the UBMS program while attending Highlands High School, and later, got involved with the TRIO SSS program at SAC.

“I just try to push myself,” she said. “I do it for my family, but also for myself. I have to make it. There’s no other choice.”

The TRIO SSS grants are awarded to higher education partners to provide opportunities for academic development and assist students with basic college requirements.

The TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students and encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

The Upward Bound grants provide an opportunity for high school students to have early access to higher education, ultimately helping more students earn their high school diplomas and smoothly transition into their post-secondary educational journeys.
