The Mortuary Science Department will host Dia de los Muertos
(Day of the Dead) activity sessions on Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Loftin Student Center,
Fiesta Room. Sessions will be held at 8, 9:25, and 10:50 a.m.
Activities include making papel picado, sugar skulls, and erecting an altar.
Papel picado literally means 'punched' or
'perforated' paper. This traditional cut paper folk art is found throughout
Mexico and the former colonies of Spain as well as in the folk traditions of
many other countries.
Sugar skulls are a traditional folk art from Mexico used to
celebrate Day of the Dead. Mounds of colorful sugar skulls are sold by vendors
in village markets during the week preceding the holiday.
