Commencement 2017

Congrats Class of 2017!

The Class of 2017 celebrated the end to a long academic journey this past Saturday, May 13, during SAC's annual Commencement Ceremony.

Held at the Freeman Coliseum, SAC College and District administrators welcomed some 10,000 students, families and guests for the approximately two-hour long event.

In total, a record setting 1,136 graduates ceremonially crossed the stage to receive a degree/certificate bringing families and students alike roaring with applause and excitement as each name was called.

Included in the more than 1,100 graduates were two special groups of students: graduates from SAC's Travis Early College High School and the GED recipients from SAC's GED-to-College Transition Program.

The ceremony featured several guest speakers, including SAC Student Speaker, Tyshee Sonnier, a member of the award-winning SAC Speech Team and SAC Honors Academy. During her remarks, Ms. Sonnier reminded the graduates that it is important to step outside of their comfort zones and become UN comfortable sometimes.

As well, Travis's Early College High School Valedictorian, Ms. Kylie Northam, addressed the Travis graduates and recounted their first days on the SAC campus when they were mere 14-year-olds.

In addition to the student speeches, the ceremony included a keynote speech from Mr. Timothy Morrow, CEO and executive director of the San Antonio Zoo. Mr. Morrow, a SAC alum twice over, greeted the graduates and shared his personal journey of forging through higher education from SAC to UTSA and onwards into the workforce to become a visionary leader for one of our city's greatest gems. To end, he advised the graduates to "Be a Manu Ginobili and not a James Harden in life and you will be successful."
