The San Antonio College Mariachi group, Estrellas del Alamo, recently traveled to New Mexico for the 28th Annual Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque and brought home two trophies and a check for $1,250.

The Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque brings performers from around the country to attend a three-day conference which culminates in a showcase and competition to see who is the best of the best. This nation-wide competition is high stakes for the performers with the “1st Place – Overall” winner receiving a $2,000 prize.

The competition limits groups to a seven-minute performance. The categories include elementary school, middle school, high school, college/university, and open. As well, there is an “overall” winner.

The 12-member SAC mariachi group won 1st place in the highly-competitive “University/College” division. As well, they earned a second trophy and a $1,250 prize for “2nd Place – Overall.”

During the conference, SAC student Julian Morales was selected as the best violinist.

While the latest version of the SAC mariachi program is only two years old, the student musicians have already made a big, sweet noise and have performed successfully at several local and regional competitions. They also hold two popular concerts on the SAC campus during the academic year (they are scheduled to perform Wednesday, Nov. 14, in McAllister Auditorium).
