New Ranger image unveiled at Welcome Week

The new San Antonio College Rangers image was officially unveiled during Welcome Week with T-shirts, posters and a cake that served 100 people in a special event on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Loftin Student Center.

During Welcome Week students and staff received T-shirts with the new designed Ranger logo. Incoming students who attended the New Student Orientation on Aug. 23 also received a drawstring backpack that sported the new Rangers image.

Designed by Dan Melgoza, an Alamo Colleges senior multimedia specialist, the new image has the word Rangers in SAC red below San Antonio College, and a cowboy hat sporting a star.

In his remarks to Thursday’s gathering of students, staff and administration, President Robert Zeigler explained how the Ranger has been part of SAC since its inception.  The college newspaper was originally dubbed the Junior Ranger when it was established in 1926.

In his book “San Antonio College: In the Beginning…1925-1956,” former San Antonio College president Jerome F. Weynand writes about the Rangerettes who were formed in 1926 as part of the Girls Athletic Association.  They wore western outfits – and performed at college functions.  In 1947/48 there was a softball team called the   SAC Rangers, made up of students who played in a city recreational league.
