SACTACULAR Invigorates Campus

The SACTACULAR Block Party is an event that strives to be a celebration of everything SAC. Spread throughout the length of campus, SACTACULAR featured various activities to promote SAC departments and to offer attendees a fun-filled, family-friendly evening. The event, open to faculty, staff, students and the entire surrounding community, was a fiesta-like block party with food booths, games, kids’ activities, live music, and more.

President of San Antonio College, Dr. Robert Zeigler said, “Our goal with SACTACULAR was to create an event where students, faculty, staff and the surrounding neighborhood could unite to celebrate everything SAC has to offer. We’ve been around since 1925, so, we know there are a lot of people out there that have ties to SAC. Still, the attendance and participation at SACTACULAR definitely exceeded our expectations. The excitement surrounding this event is invigorating.”

An estimated 1,700 to 2,000 people were in attendance on Friday afternoon/evening as SACTACULAR took over the red-bricked mall area throughout the campus. SAC students, programs and departments were showcased in this festive gathering. Some of the activities that lined the paths of campus included a showcase of academic departments like Mortuary Science, Emergency Medical Services and the Eco Centro and a sprinkling of kids’ activities in the SACTACULAR “Kids’ Zone.” Some of the most popular activities included: a movie screening of Despicable Me 2, the Game Box, a live animal show with Zoomagination, a balloon artist, a bungee jump, and a low rider show.

Over at the main stage, young students in Mariachi Los Tigres from the Stephen F. Austin Academy of Fine Arts took center stage as the official opening act; SAC students performed as the ASL Glee Club; and “Colao” performed as the headlining band. To wrap up the night, SACTACULAR featured a Michael Jackson impersonator. Raul Riojas, a former SAC student, along with his cadre of multi-talented back-up dancers, some of which are also SAC students, closed the event to a cheering crowd.

By the event’s end, the excitement was bubbling about next year’s SACTACULAR. Rave reviews came in as people said they indeed participated in one spectacular evening at SAC! There are talks that SACTACULAR will become an annual event. Until then, you can relive SACTACULAR ’13 by viewing the Facebook photo album here.
