Some 125 San
Antonio College students received nursing pins at the ceremony Tuesday, Dec.
11, at McAllister Auditorium. More than 800 audience members, friends and
family, were in attendance.
The
Nurses Pinning Ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition, dating back
before the turn of the 20th century.
Students
receive their nursing pins after meeting the necessary program requirements for
completion of the nursing program. The event included the Nurse’s Pledge
and lighting ceremony.
SAC Nursing graduate Ray Lynn Ruiz recently endowed the Caring Award.
Karen
Prendergast was honored with the first award. Each semester this $500 scholarship will be given to the graduating
senior, nominated by faculty or fellow students, who best exemplifies the attributes
of Caring: compassion, confidence, conscience, commitment and comportment.
The officers of
the Texas Student Nursing Association (TSNA)
were also honored at Tuesday’s ceremony. TSNA President Karen Prendergast got the Platinum Leadership Award, Vice President Jennifer James received the
Crystal Leadership Recognition Award, Secretary Naomi Hernandez received the Community Rising Star, and
Information Secretary Tori Murry got the Student Award of Excellence.
