The San Antonio College speech team may be small but they are mighty. The team participated in the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association’s (TIFA) Spring State Tournament and left with several victories, including finishing third place out of 15 attending schools.

In addition, the speech team’s coach, Justin Blacklock, was recognized as the TIFA Educator of the Year.

The tournament took place in early February and included colleges and universities such as the University of Texas – Austin, Texas State University, the University of Texas – Dallas, the University of Texas – El Paso, the University of North Texas, and Rice University.

The SAC speech team won third place in Overall Individual Events Sweepstakes on both days of the tournament. The team also won first place in Limited Entry Sweepstakes on the first day.

SAC student Aaron Delgado was named to the TIFA All State Squad. The honor is given to students who show the best in intercollegiate sportsmanship, high grade standing, and service to their community.

During the weekend tournament Blacklock, coordinator for speech workshops and director of the forensic program at SAC, was awarded the Educator of the Year honor by TIFA, which recognized his many years of service to the organization.

He won a similar honor in 2019, when he was named Educator of the Year by the Texas Speech Communication Association.

Originally from Corpus Christ, Blacklock came to SAC to study speech communication and was a member the speech team. He won a scholarship to Texas State University in San Marcos where he received a bachelor’s and master’s in communication studies.
