Alamo Colleges provides work-study eligible students the opportunity to earn their federal work-study award by working for non-profit and governmental agencies (Community Work-Study: CWS) in jobs that align with their field of study.
These work-study experiences are valuable to students as they have the opportunity to apply classroom learning, add value to their employer, gain relevant experience and begin to build a professional network. According to employer surveys, these work-study opportunities enhance student marketability to upon college graduation.
Through financial aid funding Alamo Colleges supplements the students’ wages at the following rates:
Non-profit & Governmental Agencies and Public School Systems
100% Small Private-Sector Businesses (as defined by 13 CF 121.101)
75% Other Private-Sector Businesses

An internship is a field of study-related work experience that allows students to work in a professional environment to gain valuable knowledge, training, and skills.
This experience also allows college students the opportunity to explore and better define their career interests. Alamo Colleges welcomes businesses of all sizes to create internship opportunities for our students to consider.
Alamo Colleges will partner with businesses interested in providing internship opportunities that
- agree to compensate the intern and to abide by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
- accommodate the student’s academic calendar
- present a learning experience that provides for applying knowledge gained in the classroom
- offer an experience that has a defined beginning and end
- provide a job description with desired qualifications
- arrange for supervision and feedback by a professional with expertise in the student’s field of study
- supply the resources, equipment, and facilities that support student learning
A business interested in providing an internship-type experience as described above but is not able to pay 100% of the student wage may consider partnering with Alamo Colleges.If your business is interested in posting part-time jobs for Alamo Colleges students, sign up as a New Employer through Handshake.

Foster involvement with students:
- Volunteer as a mentor
- Host a volunteer group within the Advocacy Centers
- Host or participate in off and on-campus community events
- Donate goods or funds to our Advocacy Centers
- Volunteer in college-sponsored community events
As part of a district-wide commitment to student success and meeting the needs of students experiencing poverty, on-campus advocacy centers have been implemented across all five of the Alamo Colleges.

Guided service using your industry expertise to prepare students to career readiness: Career Speaker Series on Resume Building/Interview Skills, Career Fairs, Student Leadership, Study Abroad, Clubs.
Share your occupational expertise with students to prepare them for career readiness. Topics can include industry-specific information or career development topics, such as résumé writing, interview skills, leadership, and more.

About Skills-Based Training
Alamo Colleges integrates skills-based training in academic courses and non-credit learning experiences.
In the fully online learning experience, participants practice the skills needed to achieve competencies. For example, participants in the Career Management skills training learn, practice, and are assessed on the demonstration of these skills:
- Learning about career options that fit with personal interests
- Searching and applying for jobs using the internet
- Creating a resume and cover letter with step-by-step instructions
- Practicing interview techniques and self-advocacy
A credentialed Badge Coach:
- Facilitates each skills training course
- Grades submissions
- Provides feedback
- Assesses the demonstration of sub-competencies
- After completing a skills-based learning experience, participants earn a digital badge to showcase their skills on social media, resumes, and e-portfolios.

The AlamoEXPERIENCE model partners with employers to ensure every student connects to an experiential learning experience, to provide students with the opportunity to explore career choices and develop relevant connections in their chosen industry.
Experiences are paired with a NACE Career Readiness Competency and documented on the students’ AlamoEXPERIENCE Transcript.
A students’ AlamoEXPERIENCE Transcript is a verified record, documenting student’s engagement, to include experiential learning experiences.
