Graduate Spotlight: Alyssa Vasquez-Garza
May 7, 2024
From a young age, Alyssa Vasquez-Garza knew she would attend St. Philip’s College. She has lived on the east side of San Antonio most of her life, and, at one point, she lived within walking distance of the main campus. “As a child, I came to St. Philip’s College with my older cousin. I visited the library regularly with her while she studied,” said Alyssa.
On May 23, 2024, Alyssa will earn her Associate of Applied Science degree. Majoring in Business Management and Technology is the first step towards reaching her ultimate goal of owning her own food truck business. “I love food trucks. They have always inspired creativity for me. It is just something I know I want to do,” she said.
During her time at SPC, Alyssa has taken every opportunity to get involved in the campus community and broaden her experiences. She is current treasurer for the Tiger Network student organization and a St. Philip’s College Princess for the royal court.
For the past year, she has interned as a Student Success Generalist in the Welcome Center. “The best part of working at SPC is being able to help students. I have the opportunity to help my peers navigate the college and provide information on student services and resources available,” she said.
When asked what helped keep her motivated, Alyssa said, “My son is the reason I came back to school. I want to provide the best for my son, and I knew investing in my education was the best thing I could do for him. I want to show my son a better life than I had.” Alyssa’s three-year-old son attends the daycare at the Child Development Center and is a Tiger in the making.
Next Fall, Alyssa will attend Texas A&M San Antonio to begin her studies for a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in marketing. This May, Alyssa will serve the college one last time as a member of the Commencement Stage Party. She will introduce the Commencement speaker.
Congratulations Alyssa!
