Diana Poltiron, the current president of St. Philip’s College Welding Club, will be graduating in May with a Welder/Welding Technologist, Associate of Applied Science.

Diana first became interested in welding during high school, where she learned the basics. She found her passion when she came to St. Philip’s College, where she realized that being a woman in this field felt empowering.

“I honestly didn’t think my college experience was going to be as good as it was,” said Diana. “At times, I was the only female in my classes. At first, I didn’t think anything of it, but over time, I learned to use my inner strength to defy statistics and society. I know I can do the same things any of my male peers can.”

Diana currently interns as a welder’s helper at Southwest Research Institute. Her duties are to prepare materials for the welders, which includes laying out and fabricating metals. Her journey has not been easy as she has had to juggle going to school and working, but Diana’s outlook has stayed positive. “It feels good to achieve. Every day is a new experience. I know it is going to be emotional when I walk the stage. I will feel so much pride for my family and classmates.”

After graduation, she plans to sell welding art and apply to the aircraft technician program at SPC. Her ultimate goal is to become an aerospace welder, working for NASA.

Congratulations Diana!
