SAC Hosts ACCT Board Reception

San Antonio College (SAC) hosted the annual summer reception for more than 40 members of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) at the Scobee Education Center. Alamo Colleges Board Trustee – District 5, Mr. Roberto Zarate, who is the current national chairman for the ACCT, welcomed trustees representing various community colleges nationwide. Joining in the event were Dr. Bruce Leslie, Alamo Colleges Chancellor, and Mr. Harvey Najim, Alamo Colleges Partner, who both shared the vision and mission for the Alamo Colleges.  Guests were able to tour the Scobee Education Center and watch a demonstration in the Planetarium.


SAC's Scobee Center Nets NASA Funds for Consortium

San Antonio College’s (SAC) Scobee Education Center is part of an educational consortium led by the Wex Foundation and the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Prefreshman Engineering Program that received a $1.24 million NASA grant to develop Space-STEM education projects. The grant will be used to create a "Lunar Caves Analog Test Sites (LCATS)" program for science investigations, space exploration mission operations, and habitability system architectures for Space STEM learning performance. LCATS goals include preparing and encouraging underrepresented minorities, female and economically disadvantaged students to pursue higher education and careers in human space exploration. Other partners in the group include the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Education, Steuck & Associates, and with Southwest Research Institute.


SAC Holds National Spelling Bee

San Antonio College (SAC) hosted the Sixth Annual National Spanish Spelling Bee in the McCreless Hall Theatre. The competition was open to students in the 4th through 8th grades and participants came from 10 states and St. Croix, Virgin Islands. The National Spanish Spelling Bee gives contestants the opportunity to learn and apply new vocabulary, increase speaking skills, and improve communication abilities. The New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education and the Education Service Center, Region 20 presented the event.
