Board of Trustees Names Fabianke as Vice Chancellor

The Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees has approved the recommendation of Chancellor Dr. Bruce H. Leslie to appoint Dr. Jo-Carol Fabianke as vice chancellor for academic success at the Alamo Colleges.

“Dr. Fabianke brings strong leadership, decision-making and collaborative skills to a position that is critical to achieving our goal of becoming the best community college district in the nation,” said Leslie. “She has a proven ability to bring together stakeholders with disparate interests to achieve common goals and will be an invaluable addition to the Alamo Colleges leadership team,” he added.

Fabianke brings to her new position a strong academic background and 37 years of experience serving the Alamo Colleges in a number of capacities. She began her service to the Alamo Colleges as a tenured professor at San Antonio College, a position she held for 24 years. While there, she also served as the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Co-director of the Reaffirmation of Accreditation and the District Policy Liaison. Subsequently, Fabianke moved to the district offices and served as Executive Assistant to the chancellor. She then joined Northwest Vista College as the Vice President of Academics and later returned to the district administration as the District Director for Achieving the Dream.

Most recently, she served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Partnerships and Initiatives, with a nearly year-long stint beginning in January 2012 as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Success. In this dual role, Fabianke led the development of the first cross-college course inventory of more than 1,400 courses, initiated, through cross-college teams, the first consistent core curriculum, led the conversion of five separate college catalogs into a single online catalog and increased the cross-college discussions of discipline and program leads. Also, in collaboration with the colleges’ leadership and the vice chancellor for student success, she developed the Alamo Colleges’ MyMap system, an online initiative to assist students in transitioning to college successfully.

Fabianke earned her Ph.D. in higher education administration from Baylor University and her master’s in business education from the University of North Texas, where she also was awarded a bachelor’s in business administration.

Fabianke has served as Baldrige Examiner and Texas Assessment of Performance Excellence examiner. She has also served as a Pacesetter Examiner through the Continuous Quality Improvement Network. She has presented at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) annual conferences. Fabianke also has provided key input at the Texas Association of Community Colleges legislative meeting and has represented the Alamo Colleges at the Association of Community College Trustees conferences.

At the Alamo Colleges, high quality education and low costs provide exceptional value to students and alumni who are major contributors to the economy and culture of our community.
