Young Leaders Conference Offers Help for College

High school juniors and seniors who want to succeed in college can get a head start at the Alamo Colleges’ 2013 Young Leaders Conference. This year the annual event, to be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center Auditorium, focuses on leadership and preparation for college success.

To kick off the conference, keynote speaker Dr. Peter Ostrum, who starred as Charlie Bucket in the 1971 motion picture Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, will offer his unique perspective on leadership and success. The goals for the conference are simple but bold: to provide a FREE one-day event for high school juniors, seniors and their parents to engage in conversations and activities that address: interpersonal communication; career exploration; paying for college; campus/community engagement; time and money management and student leadership development.

Ten scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded at the conference to students planning to attend one of the Alamo Colleges. There also will be door prizes and the High School Spirit Award (for the school with the highest participation - reigning champ is McCollum High School). College representatives and staff in the Mobile GO Center will be on hand to share information on preparing, applying and paying for college.
