Student of the Month - January

Michael Torres
Major: Social Work
GPA: 3.5
Palo Alto College

Michel Torres is the recipient of the January 2013 La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Student of the Month award and will receive $500 funded by La Prensa Foundation founded by Amelia and Tino Duran.

Mr. Michael Torres is pursuing an Associates of Arts in Social Work and maintains a 3.5 G.P.A. overall of all four semesters. He is hoping to work with LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, and Queer) homeless youth in the future with non-profit management. His future academic goals is to transfer to Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) to pursue a Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW) and then transfer to UT-Austin for his graduate program with his Master’s program in Social Work.

Michael is currently the President of the Palomino Alliance Coalition (The first Gay/Straight Alliance to be formed) which is a club to provide a safe and supportive environment for the LGBTQ and straight allied community at Palo Alto College regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. What lead to the formation of the club was to bring to the campus more awareness and education about the issues that are affecting this particular community and to promote encouragement by enlightening the talents that our students at Palo Alto College have to offer. He also brought awareness to this special day called “Transgender Day of Remembrance” which a display case was decorated with high heels to remember and stand in solidarity for those who identify under the Transgender umbrella who were murdered or killed for solely being themselves. He also volunteers his time at the Haven for Hope SA food bank.

He is a hard worker and self- motivated individual who enlightens everybody’s day by the sense of spirit he has on campus. As a community activist and advocate, Palo Alto College is proud to nominate Michael Torres for the Alamo Colleges Student of the Month Award for the year of 2013.

Please help us in congratulating Michael Torres as the Alamo Colleges – La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Student of the Month Award for January 2013
