Student of the Month

Eleanor Alvarez
Major: ASL Interpreter
GPA: 3.51
San Antonio College

In 2007 Eleanor Alvarez received her GED. Eleanor is the first in her family to attend college. She is an ASL interpreter major. Recently, Eleanor was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Beta Nu chapter at San Antonio College. The Four hallmarks of PTK are: Scholarship, Leadership, Fellowship, and Service. I would like to address how Eleanor excels in each of these hallmarks. Scholarship-Eleanor has been enlightened with the realization that scholarship is more than just receiving– scholarship is what you give back to society once you have succeeded. Leadership– When participating in Phi Theta Kappa Projects, Eleanor does not dictate to others what needs to be done; instead, she takes the initiative and leads by example. Fellowship–Eleanor extends her warm smile and personality everywhere she goes. She enjoys being a friend as well as making friends. Service-As a chapter member, Eleanor chose to serve her community service hours at the Phi Theta Kappa Food Pantry. Eleanor’s self –satisfaction comes from being able to see the people that benefit from her efforts.

Eleanor has volunteered in different events and activities on campus and in the community, showing her generosity, determination and positive character. Eleanor has dared to go beyond her own expectations, and is a true inspirational student for all of us who have the pleasure to interact with her. Eleanor has the desire to improve her life through the power of education and I have no doubt that she will go far and reach any goals she sets for herself.

On a personal note, she is the proud mother of two teenage daughters – Yes, Eleanor knows a challenge. Her gratifying moments are when her daughters’ speak of college and their career choices. As a mother, she sets a wonderful example for them. Eleanor’s face beams when her daughter’s say to her, “We’re proud of you mom.” San Antonio College is proud of you too, Eleanor. Congratulations!
