What is the Vision Care Technology program?
The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Vision Care Technology will provide students with the skills needed to be successful in the field of Ophthalmology. Ophthalmology specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the eye.
Why choose the Vision Care Program?
The Vision Care Technology program provides technical training in the field of Ophthalmology and Optometry. Skills will include but are not limited to patient history, vision assessment, manifest refractions (plus and minus cylinder), color vision, eye muscle assessments, the field of vision, A-Scans, ophthalmic photography, and surgical skills.

The goals of education in Vision Care Technology at St Philip’s College are:
- Perform ophthalmic assistant-level tasks safely and accurately defined by national certification and Accreditation standards.
- Students must communicate and collaborate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Students model professionalism and ethical behaviors in their commitment to excellence and Continuing professional development in the healthcare environment.
- Performs administrative duties of an ophthalmic assistant.
- Performs testing to evaluate eye movements and binocular functions.
- Measure visual acuity and visual fields.
- Perform surgical scrub, change gloves and gown, monitor sterile field during minor and major eye surgery, understands and practices aseptic technique.

Certification:
The Vision Care Technology program will prepare students to sit for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) exam through the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO). The COA is the entry-level core exam. The designation of a COA confirms an assistant’s knowledge in 19 specific content areas. The COA certification examination is three hours in length and is comprised of 200 scored multiple-choice questions. For more information click here.

Admissions Requirements:
It is required that all Vision Care Technology Program applicants follow the procedure below:
- Applicants who are not currently students of SPC, must go to "ApplyTexas.org"
- Meet program requirements
- Must provide all official transcripts to admissions and records
- Be College ready in English, Math and Reading
- Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher
Unsuccessful completion of all items within the mandated time frame will preclude the application, and therefore, the applicant will not be considered for admission review.
Meeting the Criteria for selection does not guarantee admission to the program. The final selection will be based on the applicant pool and available space.
Ensure to submit official transcripts from all colleges attended. Please see the application checklist for additional information.

Selection Process:
The Vision Care Program is currently accepting applications.
Applications are reviewed and considered in the Summer for the upcoming Fall semester. The application deadline is August 11, 2024. Selected applicants will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance and provided additional information.
