Internships Employers
Internships
The Office of Workplace Learning at Alamo Colleges is eager to connect students to employers seeking to hire them for positions related to the student’s selected career field.
Through the Employer-Student Connection, employers may recruit and hire Alamo students into career-relevant positions to improve students’ job prospects post-graduation, while employers expand their workforce and contribute to the education of the next generation of professionals.
Students may be recruited and hired to work as
- part-time employees (with no predetermined end date)
- part-time interns (one-term internship, with the option to extend the internship)
- full-time interns (a one-term assignment, with no option to extend the internship).
The Office of Workplace Learning embraces the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) definition of this type of employment as a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. This type of employment allows students to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths and allows employers to guide and evaluate talent.
To ensure that an experience—whether onsite or remote—is educational, all the following criteria must be met:
- The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom.
- The work is related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
- The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
- The experience has a job description with the desired qualifications.
- There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
- There is routine feedback from the experienced supervisor.
- There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning.
Alamo Colleges welcomes employers of all types and sizes to offer career-relevant employment and internship opportunities to Alamo Colleges students.
Alamo Colleges will post and promote businesses’ employment and internship opportunities directly to student majors the employer seeks, and collect applications for employers who:
- Offer paid career-related employment or internships
- Provide learning and career development
- Accommodate the student’s academic calendar
- Provide regular performance feedback, discussion of career development, and workplace professionalism·
- Agree to the terms of the Alamo Colleges Employer-Student Connection MOU
