Heritage Society
As a member of the Heritage Society you will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Alamo Colleges Foundation’s mission to provide life-changing support to Alamo Colleges students as they work to achieve their dreams of a college education.
The Heritage Society is composed of forward-thinking donors like you who have opted to make their core values known to future generations through one of the many different types of planned gifts.
As a member, you will get special recognition and engagement, customized communications and access to various special events across the Alamo Colleges District. There are numerous ways to create a planned gift.
Bequests

A bequest — a gift in your will — is a simple and convenient way to create your own legacy at the Alamo Colleges. Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. Your bequest may be given for general use or you can designate a specific purpose. Endowments live forever because only a portion of the fund’s earnings are available for spending annually. |
Types of Bequests
Specific bequests are used to make a gift of a specific dollar amount or specific asset (such as securities, real estate, or personal property).
Residuary bequests are used to give all or a portion of the remainder of your estate after payment of expenses and any specific amounts designated to other beneficiaries.
UnrestrictedThe most impactful bequest is unrestricted, allowing the funds to be used wherever the Alamo College’s need is greatest and enhancing the College’s ability to continue its mission. |
RestrictedYou may designate your bequest gift to support a specific program or purpose that reflects your interests (ex. specific programs or scholarships). If your request is restricted to a specific purpose, it is important that the following wording be added at the end of the provision. This will ensure that in the remote possibility, a specified purpose may cease to need funds in the future, an alternate use for the bequest may be determined. |
If changed circumstances should at some future time make it impossible or impractical to carry out exactly the above purpose in the above manner, then the Alamo Colleges District may change the purpose and manner as near as is practical to the original intent.
Including the Alamo Colleges Foundation in Your Will
Because a will is an important legal document, you should seek an attorney’s help. To assist you with this important process, we offer suggested wording below.
We know that each individual situation is unique. Therefore, these examples include only some of the possible gift opportunities. We encourage you to discuss your intentions with us at the Alamo Colleges to ensure that your wishes will be properly followed and recognized.
Percentage of estate for unrestricted purposes:“I give to the Alamo Colleges Foundation, a nonprofit located at 2222 N. Alamo Street, Ste. 305, San Antonio, Texas 78215 (Federal Tax ID Number), ___percent (%) of the remainder of my estate to advance its mission of strengthening the Alamo Colleges' capacity to empower for success the diverse communities served by each of the Alamo Colleges..” |
Percentage of estate to establish an endowed fund:“I give to the Alamo Colleges Foundation, a nonprofit located at 2222 N. Alamo Street, Ste. 305, San Antonio, Texas 78215 (Federal Tax ID Number), ___percent (%) of the remainder of my estate to establish the _____________ Endowed Fund. The portion of this fund available for spending each year shall be used to ___________________. Contributions may be added to the Fund at any time. If changed circumstances should at some future time make it impossible or impractical to carry out exactly the above purpose in the above manner, then the Alamo Colleges Foundation may change the purpose and manner as near as is practical to the original intent.” |
Beneficiary Designation Gift

It is very simple to name the Alamo Colleges Foundation as a beneficiary. Start by requesting a change-of-beneficiary form from your policy administrator or download the form from your provider's website. Make your desired changes and return the form to establish your gift. You can also designate whether a beneficiary will receive the full remainder of your account or a partial amount. It is also important to inform the Foundation of your gift so we can ensure the funds will support the campus area of your choice after your lifetime. |
Form a Scholarship
Creating a scholarship is the best way to support students in a variety of programs for years to come. This option is truly a gift that keeps giving. There are two options of forming a scholarship. One is through an endowed scholarship and the other is through a non-endowed scholarship. An Endowed Scholarship comes from funds that are donated and then invested in a portfolio. From there scholarships are then awarded to individual students each academic year. Non-endowed Scholarships are not permanent. The funds are distributed to students throughout the year until funds have been dissolved. |
