Essay Prompt: Please describe your journey in attending Alamo Colleges:
WITHOUT USING YOUR NAME share a short description of yourself that includes:
- Hometown, hobbies, strengths
- Involvement (employment, family commitments, community service, organizations, military service, other activities)
- Reason for your selected degree program
- Plans after you complete your degree or program at Alamo (employment or transfer college)
- Barriers to your goals that a scholarship may help you achieve.
- Essay should be at least four sentences and less than 800 words.
- ALL RESPONSES MUST BE ANONYMOUS. If you include personal identifiers (such as name), your essay score will be reduced.
- Respond to the essay prompt thoroughly, keeping in mind that your application will be reviewed and scored by a panel of judges. Consider writing your essay in a word processing program like Microsoft Word so you can edit it as needed before cutting and pasting it into your application.
- Be sure to use complete sentences.
- Be sure to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- A minimum of 4 sentences and maximum of 800 words is required for the essay.
- Consider jotting down your essay response as an organized outline or draft before you begin. Next, fill in the details to engage the reader.
- If you need help, have a friend or family member review your statements. If you have time, consider using the services of the NLC Tutoring Services center or an English instructor on campus.
- NOTE REGARDING AI: There are many AI tools available to students (like ChatGPT). While AI tools can be helpful for brainstorming ideas, outlining, or editing, and are often useful when learning a language, your final essay must be your own work. It is expected that students write the essay submitted for review on their application. The essays we love to read, and that are most helpful to us in making a decision, tell us something new about you and (most importantly) are on your voice. We should hear your voice and your perspective when reading your essay. The quality of your writing isn’t as important to us as the message you’re sharing.
