Overview of the Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee

On December 9, 2024, the Alamo Colleges District held its first Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee meeting to begin planning a potential $987 million bond for the May 2025 ballot.

The Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee will play a vital role in providing feedback and recommendations as the Alamo Colleges District prepares for a potential bond proposal.

The committee will be focused on addressing community growth, meeting the needs of a growing population, and expanding workforce programs.

Enrollment Growth and Community Needs

Fall semester student enrollment across the Alamo Colleges reached an all-time high this past semester, with over 79,000 students.

As the District approaches completing projects from the 2017 $450 million bond, the focus will shift to future initiatives that will sustain and enhance the quality of education and training across the Alamo Colleges District.

2017 Bond Achievements and Economic Impact

The 2017 bond included 20+ projects of uniquely designed projects around the Greater San Antonio area, including:

  • Construction of two education and training centers, with a third center under development.
  • Two STEM centers.
  • A Welding & Auto Body Collision Building.
  • The John L. Santikos Micronaut Center.
  • A First Responders Academy.

New buildings and renovations to support students in career fields such as nursing, cybersecurity, and tourism, hospitality, and culinary arts.

In addition to the new and renovated capital improvement projects, part of the investment involved much-needed IT enhancements and real estate acquisitions, allowing the Alamo Colleges District to continue expanding its footprint in its eight-county service region.

The economic impact of the 2017 bond on our community is estimated to be over 7.5 billion dollars over five years.

The proposed 2025 bond aims to build upon past successes, accommodate growth, and foster economic and social mobility for students.

The advisory committee will meet several times over the coming months.
