Jami Turnage was working low-paying jobs and barely making ends meet; it wasn’t the life she envisioned for herself. She and her husband relocated to San Antonio in search of new opportunities. She knew education needed to play a central role in their pursuit of a better future.

She enrolled at St. Philip’s College in 2019 and was on track to complete when the pandemic struck, and her husband got laid off. Their two-income household became one.

Jami found herself in a pivotal moment in her life.

Would she have to give up on her college and career aspirations and find a second job to help make ends meet?

Jami started looking for options to get the financial help she needed when she learned about the Alamo Colleges Student Emergency Aid. Once she received the financial assistance that allowed her to pay her tuition, Jami continued with her online courses.

She recalls her experience with AlamoONLINE as life-changing because she was able to “still proceed with my career and have somebody believe in me even through the most trying times.”

“It was such a motivator because it made me believe that St. Philip’s College was there for me,” Jami said.

St. Philip’s College provided her with the opportunity to pursue her passion for IT and advance her career. Even though she juggled a full-time job, she maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Jami’s determination to obtain her degree quickly helped her realize she was capable. She believes her experience with the online program increased her workplace confidence and contributed to her professional skills.

Obtaining her associate degree ignited a passion in Jami, and she plans to continue her education at a four-year university to continue learning and advancing her skills.

She is hopeful her story will inspire others to pursue their dream of finishing their degree. “My online learning experience has shown me that it is possible to continue where you left off.
