What is the sociology program?

Sociology is the scientific study of social interaction. Its subject matter is broad in scope, ranging from intimate family life to broad social movements, from criminal behavior to religious activity, from unique characteristics of specific ethnic groups to the shared norms of an entire culture, from analysis of occupations to that of leisure.

Sociology Program Highlights

Sociology is generally understood to be an academic and professional discipline. However, through sociology’s focus on higher-order thinking, creative analysis and evaluation of society, volunteerism and service-learning, the discipline uniquely prepares the next generation of critical thinkers to strive for creative solutions in the workforce and establishes mutual respect for all.

Sociology Career Areas & Employment Positions

With its interesting subject matter, sociology offers preparation for careers in journalism, politics, public relations, business administration, public administration and/or other fields that involve fact-finding skills and working with diverse groups. Employers look for the research and critical-thinking skills that an undergraduate education in sociology provides.
