Petition for Credit/No Credit |
The following FAQ provides guidance for grades, policies impacting grading, and graduation requirements. These will be updated as further information becomes available.
The information below can assist you in making an informed decision about whether to take the CR/NC option. After grades are posted, students will have the option to petition for a grade change to Credit/No Credit. An online form will be available for students to make the grade change request to Credit/No Credit (CR/NC), in place of the original grade, for Summer 2020 courses.
Students should consult with their faculty and academic advisor about how petitioning for a Credit/No Credit grade will impact their progress to graduation, eligibility for professional licensure, financial aid, and/or admission to transfer programs in the future. Consulting with your faculty instructor and your academic advisor may help in deciding which choice is right for you.
For some student populations selecting the CR/NC option may not be the best viable choice. This is an individual decision each student must make for each of their classes. Students are responsible for making an informed decision based on their specific situation. Read ALL FAQs carefully and discuss the matter with your faculty instructor, academic advisor, your intended transfer institution, and financial aid as needed.
Financial AidElecting the CR/NC option should have no impact on student’s eligibility for current or future federal aid. It will not impact the calculation of Satisfactory Academic Progress. We have not currently received notice of any impact on state aid like the Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) program either. If you have questions, please contact the Student Financial Aid Office. |

Summer 2020 Adjustments to the CR/NC OptionAlamo Colleges District will adopt an optional Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) grading system for courses for the Summer 2020 semester. The process is as follows:
|
Academic Standing and Credit/No CreditA student’s academic standing is suspended for the current Summer 2020; therefore, it will not impact academic warning, probation or dismissal status for students. Students who are graduating in Summer 2020 must still meet the overall GPA of 2.0 and meet major requirements. |
Summer 2020 CR/NC Policies
- During the summer semester, student course work and examinations, etc. will continue to be graded in the traditional format (A, B, C, etc.), and the traditional final grade will be posted in ACES.
- Credit/No Credit courses appear on the permanent record as a grade of “CR” if the student’s grade is an “A,” “B”, or “C” or as a grade of “NC” if the student’s grade is a “D”, or “F.”
- Both “CR” and “NC” grades will not be computed into the students’ grade point average.
- Students earning a “CR” grade will receive the course credit(s), but the CR grade will NOT be computed into grade point average.
- Students earning a “NC” grade will NOT receive the course credit(s), and the NC grade will not be computed into grade point average.
- A grade of “Credit” in a course will be considered successful completion of the course, including counting the course towards the core curriculum, and degree requirements, as well as satisfying prerequisites for sequel courses.

It does not negatively impact academic standing.
A student’s academic standing is suspended for the current Summer 2020 term; therefore, it will not negatively impact academic warning, probation or dismissal student status. However, students may move in a positive direction for standing if earned grades allow it.
Students who are graduating in Summer 2020 must still meet the overall GPA of 2.0 and degree requirements.
Students who have applied for graduation and want a course with a grade of D to apply to their requirements (if applicable) should not opt into CR/NC. The grade of NC for that course would not meet the requirements for graduation.
Students who are graduating in Summer 2020 must meet the overall GPA of 2.0 and degree requirements. A grade of Credit (C) can be used to fulfill graduation degree requirements. A grade of No-Credit (NC) will not fulfill the requirements for graduation if the course is being used to meet a degree requirement. Students who have been awarded a degree in Summer 2020 using a grade of D, who subsequently opt to take the NC, will have their degree retracted if no other courses are available to fulfill the degree requirements. An overall GPA of 2.0 is required for courses applied to a degree. The grade of CR/NC will not be used to calculate GPA requirements for awarding a degree. If a degree is awarded prior to the submission of the CR/NC petition, your awarded degree can be rescinded and removed from your student record if deemed ineligible.
A grade of CR/NC cannot be used to calculate GPA requirements for awarding a degree. If you are awarded a degree prior to the completion of your CR/NC petition, your awarded degree can be rescinded and removed from your student record if deemed ineligible.
A grade of “CR” or “C“ or better will satisfy your pre-major requirement at the Alamo Colleges District.

Yes, they are eligible for the CR/NC option.
If “CR” is earned, it will satisfy the prerequisite for future registrations.

Other Considerations
F-1 visa holders should consult the International Student Services Office at their respective college for guidance regarding the CR/NC.
Students who are currently enrolled in workforce programs should consult with their faculty and academic advisor about how petitioning for a Credit/No Credit grade will impact their progress to graduation, eligibility for professional licensure, financial aid, and/or admission to transfer programs in the future.
Do NOT opt-in for the CR/NC option for a class, which is being repeated because it will not replace a letter grade.

VA benefit payments received for Summer 2020 terms will not be impacted by choosing the CR/NC option due to the exception made by SB 3503 law which is in effect until December 21, 2020; however, there could be future implications as follows:
- Students that receive CR grades for a course required by their degree program will not be permitted to have benefits awarded for the same course at the Alamo Colleges if they choose to take the course again to replace the CR grade with a punitive grade.
- Examples of this would be if the student needs a punitive grade to transfer to another institution or to raise their GPA
- Students will still exhaust benefit entitlement for the course that is graded CR/NC and the course may not transfer to other programs or satisfy degree requirements
- If not for the SB3503, this action would cause debt for all of the benefits monies paid on behalf of the course receiving the non-punitive grade
Students planning to apply to a health profession education program should consult with their Health Professions Academic Chair, faculty and academic advisor about how petitioning for a Credit/No Credit grade will impact their progress to graduation, eligibility for professional licensure, financial aid, and/or admission to transfer programs in the future.
