On Saturday, June 30, the San Antonio College Executive Team paraded South down N. Main Ave. as part of the “PRIDE Bigger Than Texas” parade to celebrate the LGBTQ community.

The College Executive Team, led by SAC President Dr. Robert Vela, represented the college and distributed a variety of SAC promotional items, including t-shirts, stress balls, and more. In lieu of a float, the SAC team rode the “SAC limo,” a nickname for the college’s eight-person branded golf cart. Decorated in rainbow colors, the SAC limo was fittingly outfitted for the parade’s theme.

Starting from the Fletcher Administration Center, the parade attendees cheered as SAC passed them along the four-block stretch. The excitement reached its peak when SAC was officially announced while passing Travis Park, just South of the Tobin Lofts student-housing complex.

In June, Dr. Vela addressed Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the San Antonio City Council in support of the recently installed rainbow-themed four-way crosswalk which borders the San Antonio College campus.

The ribbon cutting for the crosswalk was held the day prior to the parade on Friday, June 29. The parade itself took place on Saturday night after the PRIDE Festival which took place in Travis Park. According to a MySA.com article on June 2, the events welcomed an estimated 7,000 attendees.

Dr. Vela and the College Executive Team were honored to participate in this year’s parade to show their support of the LGBTQ community and to demonstrate SAC’s commitment to serving our diverse community.

During his presentation at City Council, Dr. Vela remarked, “Our goal is to make our college as inclusive as possible..."
