SPC Alumnus Recognized for Excellence

One week after a recent outstanding alumnus of the Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts program at St. Philip's College observing 10 years of successful business returned to his San Antonio stores after personally serving his Houston store customers with free meals during the September 2017 hurricane, he and his team received unrelated-but-welcome feedback for performance excellence from entertainment business luminaries Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson.

SPC alumnus Mike Behrend is a visionary executive chef and co-owner of Green Vegetarian Cuisine, an award-winning eco-friendly business which has employed many students from the HBCU’s top-rated culinary arts program since opening Green in 2007.

Seventy percent of his business is non-vegetarian, and his advertising is nearly all word of mouth, Behrend has explained in the past. In the course of getting his Houston store back open so that customers could procure the vegetarian proteins they required to start getting their lives back in order in the harrowing first week of September, Behrend and his team gave back by offering free vegetarian meals based on the Texas region’s unique African-, Hispanic- and Anglo-American food influences to local residents in Houston---regardless of their protein preference.

While searching online for southern vegetarian food during their September business trip to the region, visiting business luminaries Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson found Green Vegetarian Cuisine the perfect business solution for both themselves and their retinues, visiting Green a combined five occasions during the regional business trip. While Perry was giving back in the region in his capacity as a participant in the Sept. 12 Hand in Hand benefit in Austin, helping to raise a reported $44 million for hurricane relief, Jackson was giving back in the region by sharing her gifts in a Sept. 13 concert performance with a social consciousness-based theme in San Antonio. While the duo left a generous business meal gratuity for one of Behrend's Pearl location employees that was widely publicized, they invited Behrend's team to prepare a healthy business meal of vegetarian comfort food fit for Jackson's live concert production crew.

About the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts at St. Philip’s College: The St. Philip’s College Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts offers five primary programs and a full-time faculty member and advisor to work directly with students in each area.
