Native American Heritage Month
Honoring Tribal Sovereignty and Resilience.
St. Philip’s College celebrates the cultures and contributions of Native Americans in observance of Native American Heritage Month (NAHM) from November 1–November 30.
About Native American Heritage Month
NAHM dates back as early as 1916 when New York was the first state to declare “American Indian Day” in an effort to recognize the contributions of America’s indigenous people. President Gerald Ford, in 1976, declared October 10-16, as Native American Awareness Week. About a decade later, this week was moved to November, as American Indian Week. Over several more decades, Congress continued to pass laws to designate a week of recognition until 1990 when the month-long recognition was passed in Congress under the leadership of President George H. W. Bush. The month was titled, “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Congress selected November because it marked the end of the traditional harvest season, and a time for thanksgiving and celebration for American Indians.
