BHM Concludes with Soul Food Taste and $2.5K Donation

St. Philip’s students, staff and faculty gathered for the much-anticipated Soul Food Taste event on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 in the Heritage Room located on the Martin Luther King campus. The celebration is the signature closing event for Black History Month at the college. Over 40 students from the college’s Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts program produced the menu items. The program is recognized as an Exemplary Workforce Education Program by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
This year’s menu included fried catfish, smoked ribs, fried chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, mixed greens, corn muffins and peach cobbler. Tiger Chefs were in the kitchen as early as 8:00 am the day of the event, preparing ingredients for the meal. The smoking of the ribs and preparing of the greens took place the night before.
The event concluded with a check presentation in the amount of $2,500 from Living in God's Love Ministry. The donation will be used to award scholarships to students.
