Graduate Spotlight : Daveon Johnson
November 25, 2024
When Daveon Johnson first arrived at St. Philip's College, he knew it was the right place to pursue his dreams. From the beginning, he felt the strong support of the faculty and staff, which helped him grow academically and as a leader. Now, as he prepares to graduate, Daveon looks back at his time at SPC with gratitude, knowing its impact on his personal and professional development.
One of Daveon's proudest moments came in March 2023, when he presented at SPC’s 14th Annual Women in Non-Traditional Occupations (WINTO) Conference. His presentation on computer operating systems showcased his technical expertise and marked the start of his growing confidence in public speaking. He was invited to speak at the Texas HBCU Conference a year later, contributing to the student panel. Here, he shared his insights on public leadership and the challenges young leaders face—solidifying his role as a voice for change.
Beyond his academic achievements, Daveon embraced opportunities to lead on campus. As president of Collegiate 100, he represented the college at the 100 Black Men of America Conference in Atlanta. This experience taught him valuable professional etiquette and networking lessons, which he plans to carry with him into his future career. His leadership doesn’t stop there. As a member of the Blue Blazer Society, Daveon has strongly advocated for men’s mental health awareness.
Perhaps one of Daveon's most notable accomplishments is his recognition as St. Philip's College’s 2024 White House HBCU Scholar. This prestigious honor has brought him a sense of pride, but more importantly, it has given him a platform to inspire others. Reflecting on his selection, Daveon said, “I was born and raised here on the east side. I want to show others that I’m just like them and that they can do it, too. I want people to see that you don’t have to be the smartest; you need the drive and dedication.”
Congratulations Daveon!
