Program Requirements

Possess proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking skills)
You are at least eighteen (18) years of age
Have a high school diploma or GED
Must have access to computer/tablet and internet
Recommended CASAS scores: Reading >228  |  Math >221
18–20-year-olds are allowed to drive intrastate until 21 years of age
Valid Texas (C) Drivers’ license
Registered students must pass a (DOT) Department of Transportation physical & drug screen
2 Valid proofs of residency (Utility bill, voter registration card, paystub, birth certificate, US passport)
Proof of Social Security Card/International students - Passport
No outstanding traffic violations
Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to communicate effectively, understand road signs, complete paperwork, and meet DOT regulations

CDL Training for Career-Ready Drivers

Students develop the knowledge and driving skills needed to prepare for the Texas Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) examination and entry-level truck driving positions.

Class A CDL

160 Hours

Prepare for a career in commercial transportation through classroom instruction and hands-on driving experience. Students develop the knowledge and driving skills needed to prepare for the Texas Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) examination and entry-level truck driving positions.

CDL Refresher Program

40 Hours

Refresh and strengthen commercial driving knowledge and skills through focused instruction on vehicle inspection, cargo handling, hazardous materials awareness, safety procedures, and federal transportation requirements. This course supports experienced drivers preparing to re-enter the workforce or renew their CDL readiness.

Class B CDL

80 Hours

Train for operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Class B Commercial Driver License, including buses, straight trucks, box trucks, and dump trucks. Students receive classroom instruction and hands-on driving experience focused on vehicle operation, safety procedures, and CDL exam preparation.

Class B CDL plus Bus Driver Endorsement

96 Hours

In addition to the Texas Class B CDL with passenger endorsement –you can receive the school bus endorsement that transports 16 or more students in the state of Texas and requires passenger safety training and maneuvering of large vehicles. Add this school bus endorsement to your Class B CDL with passenger endorsement for a total of a 96-hour training in less than 3 short weeks.

Effective Monday, September 29, 2025, DPS will temporarily suspend the issuance of ALL non-domiciled CLP/CDLs and CDLs to non-U.S. citizens who are asylees, refugees, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.
