Blessing of the Peacemakers

Northwest Vista College Celebrates Blessing of the Peacemakers on Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.

Recognizing New 2024 Peace Laureates Father and Son Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez and Ramon J. Vasquez

The San Antonio Peace Center at Northwest Vista College reminds individuals and organizations that January is a wonderful time to reengage with compassion and justice through a wide variety of events and trainings in San Antonio.

One such event is the Blessing of the Peacemakers which marks the beginning of the International Season of Nonviolence declared by the United Nations, January 30-April 4, the assassination dates of Gandhi and King respectively and respectfully. This international season honors their visions for an empowered, nonviolent world. The Blessing also marks the official closing of DreamWeek. This year’s theme, The Compassion Drive, can be seen as a direct outgrowth of the Peace Center’s work since 2010 – to dream strong into working together to become a model Compassionate City, recognized throughout the world as the heart of Texas. At each blessing, people come together to celebrate through story, community ritual, and recognition of the Peace Laureates. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with each other.

“Northwest Visa College is fortunate to house the San Antonio Peace Center on our campus and we honor those who are committed to peace and creating a compassionate world in our community,” said Northwest Vista College President Dr. Amy Bosley.

Peace Laureates are selected because they are compassionate role models in the San Antonio community whose voices of wisdom and experience speak for peace and justice in San Antonio. This year, we recognize Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez and Ramon J. Vasquez, a father and son, for their tireless work, legacy, and resounding impact on our community. To see the list of previous Peace Laureates, visit the Peace Center website at https://www.alamo.edu/nvc/experience-nvc/community/peace-center/laureate/.

“The Peace Center is committed to creating a more just and compassionate world for all. We believe that compassion is the foundation of a peaceful society, and we work tirelessly to promote compassion in our community,” said Peace Center Director Migdalia Garcia.

The Blessing will take place on January 28, at 3 p.m. at Northwest Vista College – Palmetto Center for the Arts. Please RSVP here.
